The Times has rounded up 25 of the best big houses for Christmas and New Year that are still available to rent this festive season (some at Christmas, some at New Year, and sometimes both), all offering space, style and, for now at least, availability.
The national newspaper says: “It’s not too late to round up your favourite people and book somewhere brilliant for the festivities, whether you fancy a cottage or a castle.
“Many come with cinema rooms, games rooms and hot tubs, with walks from the door.”
In Dorset, The Victorian Manor in Blandford with eight bedrooms has been highlighted.
The Times says ‘this creeper-clad Georgian manor close to the Jurassic Coast’ is ideal for sports lovers with a tennis court and a games room for holding pool or table football tournaments. There is also an outdoor hot tub.
It says: “A country house style prevails inside, with wood-burning stoves and chandeliers. Two spacious lounges open onto the conservatory, creating a large space with different seating areas.
“The eight bedrooms are no afterthought, but there may be a fight for the master suite, with its roll-top bath in the bedroom and modern four-poster bed.”
It also mentions that there are woodland walks from the door and the boot room has space for a dog bed.
Three nights’ self-catering for 16 costs from £8,607.
Another big house selected in Dorset is Tudor Grange in Bournemouth, which has 12 bedrooms all en-suite. One is a bunk room and another a family room.
The mock-Tudor building in the heart of Bournemouth was built in 1927 as a hotel.
“It’s full of grandeur, with wood panelling, decorative ceilings, an imposing staircase and an army of chandeliers,” The Times says.
“Set against this backdrop, the furniture and furnishings are more modern in style, with low-backed chairs and sofas.”
No pets are allowed but there is an outdoor play area for children to enjoy while adults soak in the hot tub. The beach is a short walk away.
