Cinema encourages customers to leave rubbish at their seats

The Plaza Cinema, on Trinity Street in Dorchester, has announced a new recycling system for its customers. It aligns with the new policy from the Government regarding simpler recycling – which comes into force on Monday, March 31.

The new system will see customers leave rubbish in front of their seat at the end of the film, which will then be cleared by a member of staff.

A spokesperson for the cinema said: “In an effort to improve our recycling system we now ask that you please leave your rubbish in front of your seat at the end of your film. This will aid our staff in sorting any rubbish into the correct bins.”

Spencer Clark, group operations manager for Picturedrome Cinemas, who own the Plaza, said that this has been part of the company’s policy for some time.

He said: “Picturedrome Cinemas has been recycling our waste for some time now, separating rry recyclables from our general waste.

“As a company, we are starting early and aligning our practices in readiness for the new UK Government Simpler Recycling, which comes into force on March 31.”

Explaining the decision in more detail, Mr Clark added that recycling will be split in the following ways from now on; Dry recyclables – made up of plastic, metal, glass, paper and card, food waste, and residual general non-recyclable waste from black bins.

Speaking more on the practices of Picturedrome’s recycling and whether any cinemas have faced difficulty since changing to the new recycling system, Mr Clark added: “Having one of our cinemas situated in Wales, which already recycles additional recycling categories, we have found no issue with our valued customers supporting and assisting us with recycling.

“I’m understanding that the Government is aiming to achieve a 65 per cent recycling rate of Municipal Waste by 2035, and as a company we support and will assist across our cinemas to make this happen.”
